Macron retaliates after Trump mocked his wife!
Trump's remarks have sparked strong reactions in France.
As reported by CNN on April 2 (U.S. time).
French President Emmanuel Macron hit back at Donald Trump on Thursday.
Previously, the U.S. president had mocked Macron’s relationship with his wife while criticizing France for refusing to join the U.S.-Israel military action against Iran.
The two leaders had previously openly promoted their friendly rapport, especially during Trump’s first term.
But at a private event on Wednesday, Trump ridiculed Macron’s wife:
"I called Macron in France—he’s been treated terribly by his wife; (his jaw is still hurting from the slap!)"
This clearly refers to a video from 2025 in which Brigitte Macron appeared to slap her husband on the face aboard the French presidential aircraft.
During a formal visit to South Korea on Thursday, Macron was asked about Trump’s comments and visibly displeased: "It was inappropriate and beneath standards."
Macron’s wife, who is nearly 25 years his senior, has long been a sensitive topic for the French president.
Over the past year, tensions have arisen between the U.S. and France over international policies.
What began as an open display of willpower—evident even in their first meeting during Trump’s first term, when they tested each other’s strength through a handshake—has now evolved into a more personal feud.
Trump has shared private information about the French president and frequently imitated him in public.
Trump’s remarks about his wife on Wednesday triggered strong backlash in France, where politicians’ private lives enjoy far greater privacy than in the United States.
Left-wing radical MP Manuel Bompard called Trump’s comments “absolutely unacceptable,” while French National Assembly Speaker, centrist Yaël Braun-Pivet, also criticized Trump.
"We are currently discussing the future of the world," she said, "we see our fellow citizens deeply affected, and meanwhile, people are sacrificing their lives on the battlefield, yet we have a president laughing and mocking others."
