Foreign media: The surge in China's new drug development is driving up the prices of laboratory monkeys, even reaching levels seen during the pandemic, leading to the suspension of some research projects.
Guo Xiangyu (translated name), a scientist at Jinan University in Guangzhou who studies non-human primate models, said that since the Lunar New Year, prices for laboratory monkeys have been continuously rising, with current supplier quotes averaging around 180,000 RMB per animal. Not only are they expensive, but they are often difficult to purchase because laboratory monkey resources have already been pre-booked.
Guo's lab requires 30 to 50 laboratory monkeys annually for pathological and molecular biology analyses in major brain disease research. However, due to supply shortages, some researchers have had to delay their animal experiments.
