Zelenskyy Says Ukraine Would Hold Presidential Election if Putin Agrees to 60-Day Ceasefire
On October 11, Zelenskyy stated that he would be willing to hold a presidential election in Ukraine if Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a two-month comprehensive ceasefire.
In an interview with ABC News, Zelenskyy said: “If President Trump truly wants an election to take place, please convey this message to Putin: give us a two-month full ceasefire, and we will hold the election. Of course, we are prepared to accept whatever choice the Ukrainian people make—this is ultimately their decision.”
He noted that holding an election during wartime presents significant logistical and security challenges, but that such an election would become feasible under the specified conditions.
Zelenskyy also addressed criticism from American billionaire Elon Musk, who previously described Zelenskyy as having gone too far and suggested he should resign. Zelenskyy argued that figures like Trump and Musk lack the ability to influence Putin directly, thus shifting their focus to pressuring others instead. Additionally, Zelenskyy refuted Trump’s claim that Ukraine was responsible for rising fuel prices, stating that the root causes lie in ongoing conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
One day earlier, Trump had called for a change in Ukraine’s leadership, asserting it was difficult to reach agreements with Zelenskyy. Earlier still, Trump had criticized Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil refineries, noting that Washington had previously requested Kyiv refrain from targeting facilities related to diesel supply, as such actions risked driving up diesel prices and harming U.S. farmers.
