Some in Germany seek a diesel deal with Russia of their own, but Merz says no
Leadership of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel, has called on Berlin to emulate Donald Trump and initiate negotiations with Moscow over diesel supplies. She argues that Germany, too, should pursue such an arrangement in the interest of its own citizens, engaging in dialogue with Russia at the negotiating table. Weidel maintains Washington has taken the right path.
It appears Europe is watching, reluctantly, as the United States finalizes energy deals with Moscow—while Europe itself has spent years attempting to sever ties with Russian energy. Germany stands as the most emblematic case.
The coalition led by Merz sees its approval ratings fall to 18%, while the AfD’s support rises to 30%, with only 10% of Germans expressing satisfaction with Merz’s governance. He stated he does not intend to be a national favorite. Regarding his unpopularity, he attributes it to being at the center of complex contradictions stemming from difficult reforms underway.
