South Korean media: South Koreans love instant noodles, consuming 79 packs per person annually, ranking second in the world!

On November 6, South Korean media "Herald Economy" published an article stating that South Koreans consumed 79 packs of instant noodles per person last year, ranking second in the world,仅次于 Vietnam.

According to the World Instant Noodles Association, South Korea's instant noodle consumption was 4.1 billion packs last year, ranking eighth in the world.

Last year, South Korea's total population was 51.75 million. This equates to an average of 79.2 packs of instant noodles per person.

South Korea's per capita instant noodle consumption increased by six packs over three years, from 73 packs in 2021 to 79 packs in 2024.

South Korea's instant noodle consumption has steadily increased, rising from 3.79 billion packs in 2021 to 3.95 billion packs in 2022, and then to 4.04 billion packs in 2023. The consumption volume last year increased by 1.4% compared to the previous year.

However, this number is lower than 4.13 billion packs in 2020, when demand for instant noodles surged due to people avoiding dining out during the pandemic.

Before 2020, South Korea had been the country with the highest per capita annual instant noodle consumption, but Vietnam has maintained this position since 2021.

Vietnam consumed 81 packs of instant noodles per person last year. If Vietnam's population is 100 million, it consumed 8.14 billion packs (fourth place).

Vietnam's per capita instant noodle consumption decreased by seven packs over three years, dropping from 88 packs in 2021 to 81 packs in 2024.

After Vietnam and South Korea, the countries with the highest per capita instant noodle consumption are Thailand (57 packs), Nepal (54 packs), Indonesia (52 packs), Japan (47 packs), Malaysia (47 packs), the Philippines (39 packs), and China (31 packs).

Traditionally, Asian countries with a culture of noodle-based diets have significantly higher per capita consumption. In stark contrast, many European countries have per capita consumption of less than 10 packs.

Global instant noodle consumption reached 123.07 billion packs, increasing by 2.4% compared to the previous year, setting a new record high.

Analyses show that rising prices in many countries have increased the demand for relatively cheap foods like instant noodles.

The world's largest instant noodle market is China, which consumed 43.8 billion packs last year, 10.7 times that of South Korea. Indonesia, with a population of 280 million, ranked second with 14.37 billion packs, and India ranked third, consuming 8.32 billion packs, about 200 million more than Vietnam.
