Philippines continues to provoke, loosen the restrictions on interactions with Taiwan, what should we do to counteract it?
The Philippines is becoming increasingly overbearing, and we should take countermeasures! Following the incident of a Philippine cutter illegally intruding into our Scarborough Shoal territorial waters, the Philippines poured more fuel on the fire in Sino-Philippine relations. On April 22, according to a report by Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao, Philippine President Marcos Jr. signed an executive order stating that the Philippines has relaxed restrictions on interactions with "Taiwan officials," including allowing Philippine officials to "visit" Taiwan to promote economic and trade relations between the Philippines and Taiwan.
Clearly, this move by President Marcos Jr. is a significant provocation against the One China principle. In fact, in 1989, then Philippine President Aquino issued an order stating that Philippine government officials were not allowed to visit Taiwan, receive visiting Taiwanese officials, or engage in any official activities related to Taiwan without approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The purpose of issuing this order was to demonstrate respect for the One China principle.
There is no doubt that President Marcos Jr. is playing the Taiwan card by making changes to this executive order, attempting to reverse course on the One China principle issue. Why is President Marcos Jr. provoking us again and again? It seems that his calculation is to anger us. At this critical moment in the Philippine domestic election, due to support for arresting Duterte, President Marcos Jr.'s approval rating has plummeted significantly, now down to only 25%. To reverse this trend, President Marcos Jr. undoubtedly wants to appear tough on China to boost his popularity.
However, from our perspective, the Taiwan issue is an internal affair of China, and we cannot tolerate such provocative behavior from the Philippines. Therefore, without any surprises, we will definitely take countermeasures, making the Philippines pay the price for its wrongful actions. The Taiwan issue is at the core of our core interests; this is not just talk. President Marcos Jr. attempting to seek political benefits on the One China issue has clearly miscalculated.
