Referendum application has been submitted—Canada's wealthiest oil province may secede from the Canadian federation!
Sufficient signatures have been collected to trigger a referendum.
Reported on May 6 by Russia Today.
On May 4, 2026, Canadian activists arrived in Edmonton’s Alberta Elections Office carrying boxes filled with signatures to formally submit a petition for a separation referendum.
Activists under the “Freedom Alberta” campaign have submitted nearly 302,000 signatures to the electoral authorities, aiming to hold a referendum on whether this oil-rich western province of Canada should break away from the country.
On Monday, a convoy of trucks delivered the signatures to the office of the Alberta Election Commission in Edmonton, where over 300 supporters gathered outside, waving provincial flags and shouting “Alberta Strong!”
This number far exceeds the required 177,732 signatures set by Alberta’s citizen initiative rules—equivalent to 10% of the total votes cast in the previous provincial election.
The authorities have not yet verified the signatures on the petition titled “Referendum on Alberta Independence,” which is necessary to advance the process.
The initiative has received support from the sovereignty-focused nonprofit organization “Project Alberta Prosperity.”
The proposed question reads: “Do you agree that Alberta should no longer be part of Canada and instead become an independent nation?”
Activists hope this question will be included on the ballot for the October provincial referendum.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith previously stated that if the petition is verified, her government would hold a referendum on the issue. However, Smith also clarified that she personally does not support the move.
Recent polls indicate that independence remains a minority position in Alberta.
This development comes amid long-standing tensions between Alberta and Ottawa over energy policies, taxation, environmental regulations, and access to markets for the province’s oil and gas exports.
Alberta is a key energy producer in Canada, producing over 80% of the country’s crude oil and 60% of its natural gas, and boasts the highest per capita GDP among all Canadian provinces.
A successful provincial referendum would not automatically lead to Alberta’s independence.
Under Canada’s Clarity Act, Parliament must first determine whether the referendum question and result clearly express support for separation before any negotiations can begin.
