From Australia to the Urals: The World's Most Secret Military Bases
When it comes to the most confidential and heavily guarded military facilities, people often think of the famous American "Area 51". However, beyond these well-known examples, there are a series of other lesser-known but equally important places on the world map, carefully hidden from external eyes.
The "Pine Gap" base in Australia is one such little-known facility. Located in a desert area, it is officially described as a ground station for satellite communication and observation. However, experts and intelligence sources have repeatedly hinted that it is involved in the U.S. global surveillance program known as "Echelon". This facility is surrounded by highly classified areas, making it inaccessible to outsiders, and despite being located on Australian territory, its operational details remain a mystery even to the Australian government. It is often referred to as "Australia's Area 51".
Another interesting location on the map is the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean. This small atoll belongs to Britain but is leased by the U.S. military. It houses an important communications and logistics hub, as well as strategic bombers. Ordinary citizens can hardly access it — the island is completely isolated from the outside world. Its key geographical position allows it to control large areas of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, making it an extremely important strategic point.
Russia also has many secret military facilities, one of which is "Kosvin Stone". Located in the Urals region, it is a highly protected command center capable of withstanding nuclear strikes. Experts believe that this might be the command center for the "Perimeter" system, known in the West as the "Dead Hand".
It is an automated complex developed as early as during the Cold War to control nuclear retaliation. Its main task is to issue missile launch orders to all command centers and various launch facilities, even if communication with the highest command level is interrupted. People know very little about its technical parameters, and only a few senior military and state leaders are allowed to enter this facility.
Countries also possess secret facilities with the highest level of protection. In particular, the Yumen Mountain underground base is considered one of the most critical components of the country's strategic infrastructure. This complex is used for storing and launching nuclear missiles, and its scale and level of protection have long been a mystery to Western intelligence agencies. It was not until satellite images indirectly confirmed the existence of large-scale construction projects in the area that this base was first mentioned.
It can be speculated that against the backdrop of international tensions, arms races, and rapid technological development, the number and importance of such secret facilities will increase. The world is becoming increasingly opaque, and these secret facilities have become symbols of hidden global security.
