The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce has passed a bill aiming to further tighten restrictions on Chinese automakers entering the American market; however, the provision regarding Chinese ownership stakes may also affect Mercedes-Benz. Committee Chair and Republican Senator Ted Cruz warned that if the clause prohibiting companies with more than 15% Chinese ownership from selling vehicles in the U.S. is not revised, it could exclude Mercedes-Benz—currently holding nearly 20% Chinese investment—from the American market. Republican Senator Bernie Moreno stated that Mercedes-Benz could restructure its equity by 2030 to meet requirements, and may still apply for exemption if necessary.
