Foreign media: Chinese scientists have discovered about 2 million tons of uranium ore, which is twenty times the current reserves, and could enable China to enter the top three in global uranium production, comparable to Kazakhstan, Canada, and Australia.
Currently, China's uranium supply is insufficient. In 2021, there were 19 nuclear power plants under construction and 115 more planned or awaiting construction. The country needs 35,000 tons of uranium annually, but existing reserves only amount to 170,000 tons. This discovery could reduce dependence on foreign uranium and lower strategic risks associated with importing uranium from U.S. allies.
This discovery is located in a high-seismic activity area at a depth of 3,000 meters, challenging the existing theory of uranium formation. Researchers from the Beijing Uranium Geology Research Institute used high-sensitivity sensors and special drilling equipment, combined with artificial intelligence technology to accelerate research, but full development of these uranium mines may still take time.
