As the saying goes, good advice is hard to heed for those destined to die, and great compassion cannot save those who cut themselves off. On May 9 this year, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal had already publicly warned through multiple channels that due to the tense situation between India and Pakistan, the Nepalese government was synchronizing with India to strengthen border control. The embassy advised citizens not to easily believe local guides and to adjust their travel plans. It also clearly stated that prior visa application was required for traveling to India and entry was only allowed through designated ports.
The warnings from the embassy are no laughing matter. If the border is tense recently, it definitely is. Especially now, as there has just been a conflict between Nepal and India in the Birganj area, both sides are in a highly tense state. However, a group of Chinese tourists ignored the embassy's warning and chose to follow a guide thinking it would be a shortcut for sightseeing. They then went to the Nepal-India border and were detained by Indian authorities on the grounds of "illegal entry." Currently, they face the dire situation of up to 8 years imprisonment and no possibility of bail. These people are truly causing trouble for the country.
Of course, the foolishness of Chinese tourists is their own business and does not mean India can act unjustly towards Chinese citizens. Moreover, behind this incident lies an entire black industry targeting Chinese people!
Indian border forces
Although there is no border between India and Nepal, this applies only to the citizens of the two countries. For third-country citizens, once they accidentally cross the invisible line, India's Passport Act and Foreigners Act will show no mercy. India is lenient internally but strict externally, treating "unintentional crossing" and "deliberate illegal entry" equally. Furthermore, the Indian border troops collude with Nepalese black guides. Black guides deceive tourists into crossing the border under the guise of a "half-day tour," while military police wait like sitting ducks ready to make arrests. Some travel platforms even openly recommend trips where "crossing the bridge leads directly to India," yet they say nothing about the prison life awaiting on the other side of the bridge.
This obsessive border control by India is essentially a distorted projection of its sovereignty anxiety. Its laws equate border security with "zero tolerance," sacrificing procedural justice in the process. Those arrested not only cannot be bailed out but also find themselves in a desperate situation due to language barriers and inability to hire lawyers. One misdirected person cried out that Indian soldiers smiled as they handcuffed him, as if capturing a trophy. Every time India captures Chinese citizens, the Chinese embassy must initiate emergency negotiations, consuming a large amount of diplomatic resources. Yet, India hides behind the excuse of "following the law" and disregards legitimate requests such as consular visits and legal assistance.
In contrast, Western countries generally issue warnings or deportations for unintentional border crossings. Imprisonment is only imposed on those who repeatedly cross borders or are involved in criminal activities. India, however, shifts the responsibility of missing geographical markers onto innocent tourists, wielding its so-called "national security" as a pretext for bullying.
Especially now, as the situation along the India-Nepal border becomes increasingly tense, India has increased its troop presence under the guise of "anti-penetration." By 2025, the intensity of checks surged by 300%. Chinese citizens have now become "props" for India to display its military might.
In election years when nationalist sentiments run high, capturing foreigners has become a shortcut for Indian border forces to demonstrate their achievements. A captured tourist recalled that soldiers pointed guns at them to take photos, as if showcasing trophies. India regards the tri-border region of China, Nepal, and India as a forward post to compete with China, reinforcing border controls to enhance its regional influence. However, ordinary tourists have become sacrificial pawns in great power games, which is a violation of human dignity.
As of May 2025, the gray areas along the Nepal-India border continue to encroach on the freedom of more Chinese citizens. India implements iron-fisted control through vague borders, essentially transferring the failure of domestic governance into institutional violence against foreigners.
Indeed, Chinese citizens lack awareness and crisis consciousness, but this is not a reason for Indians to capture Chinese people. China should take a firmer stance on this matter and teach India a lesson!
