Foreign Media: Germany's Re-armament Causes French Concerns

Sputnik News, Moscow - According to a report by the European edition of the American political news website "Politico", citing statements from European officials, Germany's re-armament has caused concerns in France.

The report said, "As Germany strives to become the dominant military power in Europe, the political balance is changing. France is trying to maintain its importance." The report pointed out that Germany's re-armament has raised concerns in Paris.

A French official in the defense sector said that if Germany gains a leading position, cooperation with Germany would become difficult, and also, Germany's industrial and economic strength has worried Paris.

He joked, "They don't have to (like in 1940 - note) invade the Alsace and Moselle regions; they can just buy them directly."

According to another European official, the change in Germany's military potential is "revolutionary". Another source pointed out that Germany's re-armament is "the most important event currently happening at the EU level".

Previously, the Financial Times cited a document containing Berlin's plans, stating that Germany is willing to play a leading role in the EU member states' re-armament plan, positioning itself as the leader of joint weapons projects to respond to external security threats.
