An official report from the China National Space Administration (CNSA) revealed that the preliminary plan of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), led by China and Russia, includes building a nuclear power plant on the lunar surface. The purpose of this plan is to one day establish settlements on the Moon. Due to the insufficient power supply for future lunar bases provided by solar panels, nuclear energy becomes a feasible option.
The Russian side also confirmed this news. Borisov, CEO of the Russian State Space Corporation, stated that Russia and China have been jointly conducting lunar scientific research programs, and Moscow can contribute its expertise in "nuclear space energy."
Borisov further mentioned, "Today we are seriously considering a project: around 2033 to 2035, together with our Chinese counterparts, we will transport and install a power unit on the lunar surface." He said that solar panels cannot provide sufficient power for potential lunar settlements in the future, but nuclear energy can.
This ambitious plan undoubtedly presents a significant challenge, but it also represents humanity's attempt to explore and develop outer space at a new stage. If successful, it will have profound impacts on human scientific development and socio-economic progress.
