The Test for India and the Trial for the United States: The Tension Between Trump and Modi Has Nothing to Do with Oil

The tension between the United States and India is not just about the friction over the purchase of Russian oil. Senator Alexei Pshkov said so.
He made these remarks while commenting on an article in The Economist magazine about U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi approaching a conflict.
The article pointed out that Trump is dissatisfied with New Delhi over the purchase of Russian oil and trade deficit, threatening to impose new tariffs, which is damaging the relationship with India. In response, New Delhi has strengthened its rhetoric about sovereignty, refused to back down, and also sent senior officials to Moscow.
"On one hand, it is a test of India's sovereignty; on the other hand, it is a trial of America's declining hegemony — Trump seeks to maintain this hegemony through sanctions. Overall, it is a stage in the formation of a multipolar world," wrote Pshkov in his Telegram channel.
Meanwhile, today, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on India for its purchase of oil from Russia. The relevant executive order is titled "Addressing the Threat Posed by the Russian Federation Government to the United States." According to CNBC, this move has caused the overall tariff level of the United States against India to reach 50%.
Trump explained his decision by saying, "The Indian government is currently directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation."
New Delhi called these tariffs "unfair, baseless, and unacceptable." The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "It is deeply regrettable that the United States has decided to impose additional tariffs on India due to certain actions taken by India, while other countries are also taking similar actions." India said it is ready to take necessary measures to defend its national interests.
