Face off with US leader, meet again in Canada in June!
Canadian Prime Minister Carney held a press conference at the Canadian Embassy near the White House in Washington D.C. this afternoon after meeting with Trump at the White House. He spoke to the media.
Carney said that he had extensive and constructive talks with President Trump, and both sides agreed to "continue further discussions" in the coming weeks.
When talking about the issue of Canadian sovereignty, Carney said he would clearly distinguish Trump's "wishes" from reality: "Canada is not a commodity, nor will it ever be sold."
In terms of tariffs, Trump clearly stated that tariffs, especially those on the automotive industry, would continue to be maintained.
Carney reiterated what he said last week, that he did not expect to see the symbolic "white smoke" indicating an agreement at their first meeting, especially regarding trade war issues.
He called this meeting "productive."
"In many ways, I feel more confident about the bilateral relationship," said Carney, including Trump's "stance" towards Canada and the breadth of the discussion.
Carney was asked about the rising calls for independence in Alberta. Premier Danielle Smith once said that if enough petition signatures were collected, she would hold a referendum on leaving Canada in 2026.
To this, Carney only responded: "Canada is stronger when united."
He added: "As an Albertan, you can certainly raise questions, but I know my own answer."
