The Trump administration on Thursday suspended Harvard University's ability to enroll international students, a major escalation in the government's efforts to pressure the institution into following the president's agenda.
In recent weeks of negotiations over the legality of a broad records request by the Department of Homeland Security, the government informed Harvard of the decision after repeated exchanges, according to three people familiar with the talks.
"I am writing to inform you that as of today, Harvard University’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program is revoked," DHS Secretary Kristi Noem wrote in a letter to Harvard.
American Harvard University responded that the Department of Homeland Security's move to block its enrollment of international students was "illegal." The university said it would fully maintain its ability to enroll international students and scholars from more than 140 countries.
