According to the APA News Agency of Azerbaijan, the special plane of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, which was heading to Moscow to participate in the Victory Day celebrations, was forced to land in Baku. The official reason for the landing has not been disclosed, but it was later learned that the plane continued its journey to the Russian capital.
Media reports suggest that the forced landing may be related to Lithuania and Latvia closing their airspace to the Serbian leader's special plane. Previously, the EU had warned candidate countries and existing member state leaders not to attend the event held on May 9th in Moscow. Despite this, Vucic emphasized that he still intended to fulfill his commitments and reach the Russian capital, without leading a government or military delegation to avoid exposing them to the risk of sanctions.
It is expected that during his visit to Moscow, Serbian President will meet with Vladimir Putin. The agenda of the visit includes discussions on bilateral relations and the situation in the Balkans.
His visit symbolizes the stable historical and cultural ties between Russia and Serbia, especially in light of the shared memories of World War II and the Battle of Belgrade Liberation, in which Soviet troops actively participated.
