Qatar's Big Gift to Trump: $96 Billion Order
The White House announced earlier Wednesday that Qatar Airways has signed a purchase plan worth $96 billion with Boeing to buy 210 787 Dreamliner aircraft and 777X aircraft. This is Boeing's "largest wide-body aircraft order and 787 aircraft order to date."
If measured by the number of aircraft, the largest contract was in 2023 when Air India ordered 220 aircraft, but it mainly involved single-aisle 737 MAX aircraft, while the contract with Qatar Airways only involves large 787 Dreamliner aircraft and 777X aircraft.
Trump said, "This is the largest aircraft order in Boeing's history," and added that this order "is worth over $200 billion for 160 aircraft, it's great, setting records."
Trump accidentally misstated the price of Boeing aircraft during the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement with Qatari Emir (head of state) Tamim.
The list price of the 787 Dreamliner is approximately $250 million, while the list price of the 777X is approximately $440 million. Airlines typically receive significant discounts when purchasing in bulk. Boeing declined immediate comment on the order price when contacted by AFP. Journalists reached out to Qatar Airways but have not yet received a response.
The 777X has not yet been certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The aircraft is currently in testing stages, and aviation groups expect first deliveries in 2026. Morningstar analyst Nicholas Owens stated, "There are many aircraft, but if you order one today, you won't receive it within at least five years."
As of the end of April, Boeing's total order count reached 6,282.
Boeing's net order volume in the first four months of this year was 261.
