German think tank Merics predicts: Significant Chinese technological innovation in 2026
The annual China forecast from the Mercator Institute for China Studies (Merics) shows that by 2026, China is expected to make progress in core technology fields, especially in artificial intelligence.
The Berlin-based Mercator Institute for China Studies (Merics) interviewed 766 Chinese experts and observers. Nearly 80% of them said that the world's second-largest economy will achieve major breakthroughs in the field of artificial intelligence next year. More than half of the respondents believe that similar developments will also occur in semiconductors, biotechnology, and green technology.
This four-week survey was conducted in October-November. Of the 766 respondents, 699 provided nationality information. Eighty percent were Europeans, with 44% being Germans. 7% were Americans, and 4% were Chinese. A quarter of the respondents came from academia, 21% from the private sector, 12% from think tanks, and 1% from government, foreign affairs departments, and EU institutions.
