On May 22 local time, the Ukrainian ambassador to the UK and former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Zaluzhny, stated at a forum held in Kiev that Ukraine should give up restoring the borders defined when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, or even abandon restoring the borders defined when the special military operation began in 2022. He said, "Personally, I believe that the enemy (Russia) still has sufficient resources, military strength, and methods to strike Ukraine."
Zaluzhny said, "Dear attendees, do not still hope for some kind of miracle or lucky symbol that will bring peace to Ukraine - that is, restoring the borders of 1991 or 2022, followed by immense happiness."
Zaluzhny was relieved of his post as commander-in-chief of the armed forces in February 2024, reportedly due to months of disagreement with President Zelenskyy, whose term was expiring.
