Senior British military officials are concerned about the "nightmare scenario" of going to war with both Russia and China.
The Times reported that former Chief of the General Staff of the British Army, General Patrick Sanders, revealed that the UK Ministry of Defense has drawn up contingency plans to deal with a potential double crisis involving war with both Russia and China.
General Sanders emphasized that this situation could occur in less than two years unless the UK and NATO rapidly rearm, in which case the West would lose to Russia and China.
Sanders, who stepped down as Chief of the General Staff 11 months ago, stated that his former colleagues are "thinking about and simulating" the possibility of simultaneous war with Russia and China, adding:
"This indeed worries them."
In explaining how this scenario might develop, Sanders said: "We may eventually find ourselves in a situation where Russia and China, possibly supported by Iran and North Korea, unite to launch a war against Western society on two fronts.
First, a large-scale confrontation will erupt in the Indo-Pacific region, which will divert the attention of the remaining US forces in Europe. Russia will seize this opportunity to attack NATO territories it believes it can win, such as the Baltic states or distant northern regions like Svalbard.
By swiftly seizing limited objectives and territories, Russia and China will challenge NATO under the nuclear umbrella. The risks are extremely high, but the rewards for Putin will also be very great.
If NATO cannot help allies repel the invasion, "it would effectively mean the end of NATO," Sanders added.
Sanders, along with several other senior British military officers, called on the UK government to take urgent measures to significantly accelerate rearmament efforts.
The former Chief of the General Staff believes that increasing military spending is an "insurance policy" against multiple crises involving Russia and China:
"The advantage of deterrence lies in the fact that if it works, you will never have to go to war."
