France signed a treaty with Poland to sell weapons, promising "mutual assistance" in case of armed attack.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a treaty on Friday in the eastern French city of Nancy, pledging mutual assistance in case of armed attack.

Agence France-Presse reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a treaty on Friday in the eastern French city of Nancy. A clause in the text of the treaty stipulates that France and Poland will assist each other in case of armed attack.

AFP stated that the signing of this treaty coincides with Poland becoming a key member of NATO's eastern flank and feeling threats from Moscow. The purpose of signing this treaty is to strengthen defense cooperation between France and Poland to counter the increasingly threatening Russia after three years of war in Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called it a "historic event." He said at a press conference: "I firmly believe […] in any situation, good or bad, France and Poland will be able to rely on each other."

Macron emphasized that this treaty marks a "new chapter," referring to "irreversible solidarity." Macron further stressed that the foundation of France's nuclear deterrence strategy - France's "fundamental interests" - also covers the fundamental interests of its European "main partners." The French president reiterated that "since the 1960s, as General de Gaulle said, the European dimension of France's nuclear deterrence has been affirmed, and my predecessors have continuously reaffirmed it."

France is the only Western European country, aside from the UK, to possess nuclear weapons. Until now, other European members of NATO have been under the US nuclear umbrella.

This meeting between Macron and Tusk in Nancy took place while Putin was holding a grand military parade in Moscow to challenge the West.

Although Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine, the war continues. Macron said: "President Putin is on the side of war, not peace [...] those who believe that Putin yearns for peace are mistaken."
