South Korean media: Xiaomi smartphone tops the Chinese market with a surge of 39.9%, while Apple "falls from grace"! On May 10, South Korean media Newsis published an article stating that China's smartphone shipments reached 71.6 million units in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 3.3% year-over-year. According to the latest data from market research firm IDC, US-based Apple shipped only 9.8 million smartphones to the Chinese market, a decrease of 9%. With strong performance from Made-in-China smartphones supported by subsidies encouraging existing product upgrades, Apple's iPhones, which are priced high and not within the subsidy scope, have陷入困境. China's smartphone shipments have seen six consecutive quarters of growth. In terms of shipments by each manufacturer, Xiaomi topped the list with 13.3 million units, up 39.9% year-over-year. Huawei ranked second with shipments growing 10% to reach 12.9 million units. OPPO came in third with 11.2 million units, growing 3.3%. Vivo ranked fourth with 10.3 million units, growing 2.3%. Apple is the only major manufacturer to see a decline in shipments, falling to fifth place behind Chinese companies. It has been shrinking for seven consecutive quarters. In the first quarter, Xiaomi's market share was 18.6%, followed by Huawei (18.0%), OPPO (15.7%), Vivo (14.4%), and Apple (13.7%). To stimulate consumption, China offers a 15% discount on smartphones priced below RMB 6,000, with a maximum discount of RMB 500. However, due to high-priced products like the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro being excluded from the subsidy, Apple's sales were significantly affected. IDC assessed that "the subsidy policy stimulated growth in smartphone shipments in the first quarter, but Apple's pricing prevented it from taking full advantage of this opportunity."
