Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology explains the gift of 1,500 saiga antelopes to China
(Report by Kazakh International News Agency) The Forest and Wildlife Committee of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources released a statement on the afternoon of the 17th, responding to Kazakhstan's decision to gift 1,500 saiga antelopes to China to assist in restoring the population of this species in western China.
It was reported that Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that 1,500 saiga antelopes would be gifted to the Chinese government to help restore the population of this species in western regions of China.
"To implement this decision, we will discuss with the Chinese side the specific mechanisms for transferring the antelopes. The western part of China was once an important habitat for saiga antelopes, but since the second half of the 19th century, with large-scale human settlement in the region, their habitat area has significantly decreased, leading to a decline in their population," the statement noted.
The statement emphasized that according to the spring census data this year, the number of saiga antelopes in Kazakhstan has reached 3.9 million heads, far exceeding the historical record high of 1.2 million heads set in 1974.
