A 23-year-old man detonated a bomb at the border while escaping Ukraine, saying "If you don't let me go, we both die."
October 24th report: A 23-year-old man pulled out and detonated an explosive device at a train station in Ovruch, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine, during a document check. Four people, including the man, died, with more than a dozen injured.
According to local police and multiple media reports, the explosion occurred during identity checks by border officials. The perpetrator was a 23-year-old resident of Kharkiv. After the incident, the man died of severe injuries in an ambulance, and three women were killed, with about a dozen injured.
From the scene footage and initial reports, it is difficult to determine whether the motive was a premeditated attack.
Media and police pointed out that the investigation is still ongoing, and there is no evidence showing that the perpetrator was linked to any organization, nor any public eyewitness accounts directly proving that he had threatened border officers with a bomb to allow him to pass.
Based on the available clues, the more likely scenarios include two possibilities: one is that the man detonated the bomb on the spot due to panic or despair after being caught for attempting to cross the border; the other is that he tried to create chaos to escape, but ended up causing an accidental explosion.

Before solid evidence is available, it is not possible to determine whether the main motive was an attack or a failed attempt, but it cannot be ignored that the fear and despair caused by war have become a major soil for such tragedies.
