This newspaper, Beijing, June 23rd. (Reporter Wu Yue) Professor Song Mengjie's team from the School of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology, in collaboration with partners, has developed a new method to transmit and store information using bubbles in ice. The method can regulate the number, size, shape, distribution, and other characteristics of bubbles in ice, and encode and decode information using binary and Morse code. This method can be used for information storage in cold regions, and the related achievements were recently published in "Cell Reports Physical Sciences."

When water freezes, dissolved gases in the water are squeezed out and gathered together, forming bubbles. To investigate the formation mechanism of bubbles in ice, the team controlled the freezing rate and direction of a thin water film between two transparent glass plates, controlling the process of bubble formation in ice, and producing continuous ice layers containing different bubbles. How to use ice layers with bubbles for information encoding and decoding? Zhang Xuan, a member of the team and associate professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, introduced that the team corresponded the characteristics of bubbles with specific characters in Morse code and binary, programmed the freezing rate of the ice layer, and obtained ice layers with suitable bubble characteristics to realize the encoding of input information. To read this "frozen" information, the team trained a computer to automatically detect the characteristics of bubbles, decode the information into binary or Morse code, and then convert it into a readable format.

"In addition to 'freezing information,' we can also apply the formation and regulation mechanism of bubbles in ice to fields such as ice making, snow making, and the preparation of transparent materials," said Song Mengjie.
