[Europe Prepares for Freedom: Merkel Responds to Vance's Challenge]
On May 29, German Chancellor Merkel responded to criticism from the Trump administration, stating that Europe is prepared to fight for its own values if necessary.
In the ceremony of awarding the "Charlemagne Prize" to EC President von der Leyen, Merkel emphasized, "Europe is ready to fight for core values such as freedom and democracy - this is a direct response to multiple criticisms of the EU by the Trump administration." He also reiterated that Europe does not wish to escalate tariff disputes with the United States, as it would harm the interests of both sides.
Merkel specifically mentioned Vice President Vance's speech in Munich in February this year, where he sharply criticized the "internal threats" facing Europe and the "retreat" of freedom of speech.
He pointed out, "Vice President Vance questioned us in Munich earlier this year: 'What do Europeans jointly defend? For what do we fight?' To this, Europe's answer is not only clear but also the most resolute and powerful - what we defend is the belief that has persisted through countless failures and disasters over centuries: freedom and democracy are worth our firm protection, and if necessary, we will fight for them."
Since taking office, Merkel has taken a tough stance on Russia:
-- On May 23, Germany deployed the 45th Armored Brigade with a strength of 5,000 troops to Lithuania, of which 4,000 were stationed near Vilnius, just 20 kilometers from Belarus. Merkel stated that Germany will take responsibility for defending the eastern flank of NATO and will not disappoint European allies.
-- On May 28, Germany approved military aid to Ukraine worth about 5 billion euros, including the Tauro missile on the aid list.
-- Continued to increase pressure on Russia, firmly opposing the resumption of operations of Nord Stream 2.
