Mongolia-China Connectivity: Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for the Railway Project from Ganqimudu to Gashun Suhaite in Mongolia and China.
The Mongolian News Agency reported from Ulaanbaatar on May 14th that according to the press office of the government, the groundbreaking ceremony for the railway project from Ganqimudu to Gashun Suhaite in Mongolia and China was held today.
This railway project is the second railway built since the agreement signed by Mongolia and China in 1955 to construct the Zamyn-Uud railway and Erenhot railway. On February 14th this year, the governments of Mongolia and China signed an agreement on constructing the cross-border railway from Gashun Suhaite to Ganqimudu port. The construction of the project commenced three months later.
The Prime Minister of Mongolia, Oyun-Erdene Lu, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that with the expansion of the Gashun Suhaite port, the number of import and export channels will increase to 22, and the customs clearance capacity will double, which will have a positive impact on the national economy and foreign trade, improve the quality of life of local citizens, increase employment, create income sources, and become a friendly port for the region. Moreover, Mongolia will become the most reliable long-term and stable partner for China's coal supply.
With the construction of the above railway, the customs clearance capacity at the port will double, the coal export volume will increase to 165 million tons, and the annual revenue will increase by 1.5 billion US dollars. The negotiations started in 2004, and they have been ongoing since 2008 until now, finally coming to fruition.
The Prime Minister of Mongolia, members of parliament and government, representatives of the Chinese government, the Chinese ambassador to Mongolia, the chairman of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Party Committee, the vice director of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, the chairman of the board of directors of the State Energy Group, as well as representatives of contracting units from both Mongolia and China attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the aforementioned railway project.
