South Korean media: Historic moment! China's wind and solar power generation surpasses coal power for the first time!
On May 16, South Korean media News1 published an article stating that in the first quarter of this year, China's wind and solar power generation exceeded thermal power for the first time.
In the first quarter of 2025, China added 74.33 million kilowatts of installed capacity for wind and solar power, with a cumulative installed capacity reaching 1.482 billion kilowatts. The installed capacity of wind and solar power has surpassed that of thermal power (1.451 billion kilowatts) for the first time.
Thermal power can be interpreted as power generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal.
China is the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which are the main culprits behind climate change. China has committed to reducing carbon emissions, with expectations that emissions will peak around 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
Approximately 60% of China's energy comes from coal, but China is also a major country in renewable energy. According to a study published last year, China's under-construction wind and solar power capacity is nearly twice the total of the rest of the world.
