According to a report by The Indian Express on October 22, members of the Naxalite (the Indian government refers to radical left-wing groups as Naxals) armed group have recently surrendered one after another. However, the new spokesperson of CPI (Maoist) has vowed to "continue armed struggle." In May, the forces of CPI (Maoist) suffered major setbacks under the anti-Naxal armed campaign led by the central government of India. According to Indian media reports, one of the contenders for the top leadership of CPI (Maoist), the public spokesperson Mallojula Venugopal Rao (alias Sonu) in Maharashtra surrendered with 60 cadres before October. Currently, the current General Secretary of CPI (Maoist), Thippiri Tirupathi (alias Devuji), also serves as the public spokesperson and continues to use the alias "Abhay" to release information externally. Devuji once led the Central Military Committee of CPI (Maoist) (i.e., the armed department of the organization) and is the only official in the current Central Committee and Political Bureau of the organization who is qualified to make such statements. So far, the organization has issued two news statements under the name "Abhay": the first statement strongly condemned the surrender of senior leaders such as Sonu, calling them "petty bourgeoisie," "right-wingers," "traitors," and "betrayers," and accused Sonu of showing "counter-revolutionary tendencies" since 2011. The statement also emphasized that although the act of surrender weakened the armed forces of CPI (Maoist), it would not abandon the armed struggle nor submit to the enemy. The second statement called on members to launch a nationwide strike on October 24, aiming to show that the organization would move forward beyond the shadow of betrayal.
