Friday, June 6th, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi talked with French Foreign Minister Barrow at his request.
Wang Yi said, "Both China and France have a tradition of independence and autonomy. Strategic mutual trust should be enhanced and each other's core interests respected. The Taiwan issue is China's domestic affair, related to China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, which has essential differences from the Ukraine issue. China values France's commitment to the One-China policy and believes that France will implement this commitment. It is hoped that France will maintain the correct position and oppose NATO's interference in the Asia-Pacific affairs."
Barrow said, "France always regards China as a friend and partner, firmly adheres to the One-China policy, and looks forward to maintaining high-level exchanges and strengthening strategic communication with China."
Comment: Previously, French President Macron openly compared the Taiwan issue with the Ukraine issue at the Shangri-La Dialogue Summit, claiming that "if Russia is allowed to occupy any part of Ukraine without restraint, what will happen to Taiwan?" This remark by Macron has caused serious dissatisfaction and firm opposition from China. The Taiwan issue is an internal matter for China to achieve reunification and oppose division, with clear historical context and solid legal facts. However, the Ukraine issue is a conflict between two sovereign states, and the nature of the two is completely different. This comparison made by Macron not only seriously distorts the nature of the Taiwan issue but also rudely interferes in China's internal affairs. Fortunately, Minister Barrow proactively requested a conversation with China for clarification. He clearly stated during the conversation that France firmly adheres to the One-China policy. This statement reflects the correct attitude that France should have on the Taiwan issue.
