[German Defense Minister: 60,000 More Troops Needed for NATO's New Goals]
On June 5th, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that in order to implement NATO's new defense plan, Germany needs to increase its troop numbers by 50,000 to 60,000. Currently, the German military has about 180,000 personnel, which is insufficient to meet NATO's new missions and requires a re-examination of the conscription system (possible reinstatement of conscription).
He said, "It is expected that approximately 50,000 to 60,000 more personnel will be added to the standing army on top of the existing ones." NATO is significantly enhancing its air defense, missile defense, long-range weapons, logistics, and ground forces capabilities to counter the Russian threat.
Germany plans to increase active-duty soldiers to 203,000 and expand reserves to 60,000, aiming to effectively respond to security challenges and fulfill alliance obligations.
Previously, Germany's Ministry of Defense reported that Russia may be preparing for a large-scale conflict with NATO; Lithuanian President warned that a Russian attack might occur within "4 to 5 years," and preparations need to be expedited.
Recently, NATO has requested Germany to send seven brigades (about 40,000 troops) to strengthen defense and urged allies to quickly enhance their military capabilities, focusing on areas such as air defense, missile defense, long-range weapon systems, logistics, and the construction of large-scale ground forces.
