South Korean media: BYD on track to claim the global EV crown
South Korean media: Unimpeded Chinese electric vehicles, BYD is set to be No.1 globally!
On May 22nd, South Korean media "Seoul Economic Daily" published an article stating that China's electric vehicle company BYD's pure electric vehicle sales this year are likely to surpass Tesla for the first time and become the global leader. In the fourth quarter of last year, BYD became the first Chinese car brand to enter the "global top five" list of car brands, and it is consolidating its position through innovative technology and proactive marketing. BYD and other Chinese electric vehicle companies have overcome the temporary slowdown in global electric vehicle demand and continue to maintain growth momentum.
BYD's passenger vehicle sales in April were 372,615 units, a year-on-year increase of 19.4%. As of April this year, cumulative sales exceeded 1.38 million units, a year-on-year increase of 47%, firmly maintaining its leading position in the market. By brand, BYD sold 347,053 units, Denza 15,388 units, Fangchengbao 10,039 units, and Wangyang 135 units.
FAW, which ranked second, sold 238,700 units in April, including 19,200 units of new energy vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 207%. Geely Auto's new energy vehicle sales exceeded 125,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 144%. The new energy vehicle brand with the highest sales was Lixiang, selling 41,039 units in April. This figure represents a year-on-year increase of 173%. Next, XPeng sold 35,045 units, a year-on-year increase of 273%.
In April, BYD sold 195,740 units of pure electric vehicles, and as of April this year, cumulative sales reached 612,128 units. Tesla, which ranked first in global pure electric vehicle sales last year, has not yet announced its April sales data, but it is expected that the gap with BYD will further widen, as its first-quarter sales were only 336,600 units.
Chinese electric vehicle companies are making efforts to expand into overseas markets. In particular, BYD is striving to expand its export market by increasing overseas production bases. Last month, BYD held a groundbreaking ceremony for a CKD factory in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 vehicles. The factory is expected to be completed in October this year and start production of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles before the end of the year.
Additionally, BYD is building factories in Hungary (200,000 units) and Turkey (150,000 units), targeting operations by the end of next year. In Southeast Asia, the Thailand plant began producing 150,000 vehicles per year last July, and factories have also started construction in Indonesia (150,000 units) and Cambodia (10,000 units). With increased local production, overseas sales are also growing rapidly. In the first quarter this year, BYD sold 21,400 units in Brazil, becoming the best-selling new energy vehicle brand, while simultaneously selling 8,800 units in Thailand, ranking first. Growth rates in Australia, Italy, and the UK have also outpaced Tesla, particularly in the UK where sales reached 9,300 units, a year-on-year increase of 621%.
Chinese electric vehicle companies are leading the electric vehicle market by upgrading advanced technologies such as autonomous driving and battery charging. BYD announced that it will install a system called "Celestial Eye" in all its vehicles. Xiaopeng plans to launch vehicles equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving technology in the second half of this year. With the intense competition in the "ultra-fast charging technology race," the position of Chinese electric vehicle companies seems even more consolidated. The world's largest battery manufacturer, CATL from China, released a battery that can provide a range of 520 kilometers after 5 minutes of charging. BYD previously launched a charging platform that provides a range of 470 kilometers after 5 minutes of charging.
