French media: Macron will visit Greenland to discuss Arctic security issues

According to a report by BFMTV television on Saturday, citing information from the Elysée Palace, French President Emmanuel Macron will become the first foreign head of state to visit Greenland to discuss security issues after US leader Donald Trump made a statement seeking to annex the Danish island to the United States.

The station reported, citing an Elysée Palace bulletin, that "French President will be the first foreign head of state to visit the region since the threat by the US president to annex Greenland." The leaders of the three (Macron, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen) will discuss issues related to 'security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic region'."

It was reported that the official visit will take place on June 15 at the invitation of the Prime Ministers of Greenland and Denmark. In addition to the security issues in the region, politicians will also discuss climate change, energy transition, and the supply security of critical minerals. The Elysée Palace stated that this visit aims to strengthen cooperation with Greenland in the aforementioned areas as well as "strengthen European sovereignty".
