According to a May 23 report by Bloomberg, during his visit to China, Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspars Feldkamps stated that China has proposed to the Netherlands the desire to ease export restrictions related to the semiconductor industry.
Previously, China had expressed "serious concern" over the Netherlands' export restrictions. The Netherlands is home to ASML (ASML Holding), the only global manufacturer of high-end lithography machines used in the production of advanced semiconductors. However, due to pressure from the United States and other reasons, ASML has never directly sold its most advanced EUV lithography machines to China.
The report also noted that this is the first visit to China by a cabinet member of the new Dutch government since it assumed office in July 2024. During talks with Chinese officials, both countries agreed to further deepen cooperation in trade and technology and maintain communication on various issues regarding semiconductor technology cooperation. Feldkamps also expressed confidence that he would discuss this issue again with Chinese officials when the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and International Development, Renate Kleijnen, visits Beijing next month.
"Achieving as free an international trade as possible remains our goal," Feldkamps said.
