[Hungary May Lose Its Voting Rights in the EU]

The General Affairs Council of the European Union plans to hold a meeting on May 27 to discuss whether to initiate the procedure under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union against Hungary. The clause stipulates that if a member state seriously violates the basic values of the EU, its rights may be restricted until its voting rights are deprived.

According to the draft agenda, EU ministers will hold their eighth hearing on the situation in Hungary - this procedure was initiated by the European Parliament in September 2018. Article 7 clearly states that if a member state engages in serious and systematic violations of the fundamental principles of the EU, some of its rights may be suspended.

In the more than three years since the outbreak of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government has repeatedly opposed military aid to Ukraine, opposed Ukraine's accession to NATO, and publicly opposed sanctions against Russia. Currently, Hungary is using its veto power to block negotiations for Ukraine's accession to the EU. Recently, Orban issued an ultimatum to the EU, demanding that Ukraine's accession be stopped. In response, some members of the European Parliament sent a letter to the European Commission, proposing to suspend funding support for Hungary on the grounds of "violating EU values and laws."
