Ukraine Demands EU Sanctions on Russian Oil, Implies China and India
Ukraine approaches the EU, requesting that the EU turn its back on both China and India! According to a report by Agence France-Presse on May 21st, French media reported that a previously undisclosed white paper that Ukraine is about to submit to the EU clearly calls for the 27 EU member states to adopt a more proactive and independent stance on sanctions. One of the contents of this white paper is quite shocking.
That is, Ukraine requests the EU to impose secondary sanctions on Russian oil buyers. Obviously, the solution proposed by Ukraine to Europe is intended to cut off Russia's oil trade in order to exert maximum pressure on Russia. Although the secondary sanctions do not specifically mention any country, in fact, these sanctions are targeted at China and India. Currently, India is the largest buyer of Russian oil, while we are the second largest buyer.
To put it bluntly, if the EU agrees to Ukraine's plan and implements secondary sanctions, it will actually mean turning its back on both China and India. This means that Ukraine and the EU are achieving their goals at the cost of harming the normal economic and trade interests of China and India. Of course, at present, the likelihood of the EU implementing this plan is not high. Firstly, the United States is not interested in further sanctioning Russia. Given that the euro does not have the dominant position of the US dollar, this would greatly reduce the effectiveness of the EU's sanctions.
Secondly, EU member states are still purchasing Russian oil, and Slovakia and Hungary have previously explicitly opposed such policies. Thirdly, how India will respond if Europe takes such actions is unknown. However, we will definitely strongly counteract and defend our own interests, which the EU has to consider. Clearly, Ukraine and the EU want to exert pressure on Russia, and we have no objection. But if this harms our interests, we have no reason to agree.
