South Korea's Hanwha Ocean shipyard held the launching and naming ceremony for the "Jang Yeong-sil" (SS-087) conventional submarine. This submarine is the first of the second batch of KSS-III submarines in South Korea, named after Jang Yeong-sil, a renowned politician and inventor from the Joseon Dynasty.
The "Jang Yeong-sil" is the largest submarine in South Korea, with a length of 89.4 meters, a width of 9.7 meters, a draft of 7.6 meters, a surface displacement of 3,600 tons, and a submerged displacement of 4,000 tons. Its power system includes 3 MTU 12V 4000 U83 diesel engines + lithium batteries + 4 Bumhan PH1 fuel cell modules. It has a maximum underwater speed of 20 knots and a maximum surface range of 18,500 kilometers. The weapon system includes 6 533 mm torpedo tubes (for launching the K761 "Tigershark" torpedo, submarine-launched anti-ship missiles, and laying mines), and 10 vertical launch units (for launching the "Hwanseong" 4 submarine-launched ballistic missiles).
