Foreign Media: India Moves Toward Weapon Autarky but Lags Behind China

India is promoting self-sufficiency in weapon production to enhance its defense capabilities, with military equipment surpassing its arch-rival Pakistan, though it still lags behind China. The latest plan from New Delhi aims to invest $360 million to procure domestically produced Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) systems to counter recent use of Turkish TB2 drones by Pakistan and Chinese Wing Loong-II attack drones.

Robin D. Sahdev, founder of the Delhi-based think tank Imagindia Institute, stated that QRSAM is a key component of India's domestic air defense network, independently developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization, featuring rapid mobility, autonomous response, and sustainable domestic production. Sahdev noted that over 65% of India's defense capital procurement contracts for the fiscal year 2024-25 were awarded to domestic suppliers, highlighting the strategy of indigenization.
